Prior to this date the land was occupied by
Indians for hunting, trapping, and the minerals found. The river was
their highway and fishing grounds. |
| 1791 |
Alexander McComb for patents for a vast area
of land at eight pence an acre. The surveyor-general caused this land to
be surveyed, and it was divided into six Great Tracts. Number Two is
wholly in St. Lawrence County. |
| 1792 |
McComb suffered financial failure and his
interests were released to William Constable. |
| 1798 |
Patents for Tract Number Two were issued to
Daniel McCormick. Later the land was sub-divided into townships, four of
which, namely Matildaville, Granshue, Harewood and Sherwood comprised
the original Town of Colton. |
