1808-1820

1808 A road was built from Colton to Chester in Essex County cutting diagonally from the northwestern part of Harewood. The land through which it passed was taxed for the purpose.
1811 Because of the failure of the Bank of Vermont, "spotted fever" and tuberculosis, many more Vermonters migrated here.
1812 A few of the pioneers came because they had lost their fortunes as a result of the War of 1812; but the majority came because they wanted land and hoped to make life easier and happier for their loved ones.
1816 The "coldest summer in history". Crop failure pushed further migration.
1820 (about) The first known map of Matildaville (later Colton) was made.
