James Brown moved from Parishville and
located on Lot 27 on the West side of the Racket River about a mile
above what is now Colton Village. About the same time Abial Smith, Jesse
Colton Higley, Asahel Lyman, and William Bullard settled nearby. The
first religious meeting held in the town is said to be by the Christian
Sect at the home of Asahel Lyman. |

The first frame house in the town was built
by James Brown on the West side of the bridge. Horace Garfield from
Potsdam became proprietor of the land on the West side of the river at
Colton Falls (High Falls). He laid out his land in village lots and
erected the first sawmill.
Settlers this year were Pliny Hepburn and his brother Zina Hepburn on
lot 2. |

Second frame house was built by Hiram Pierce
on the East side of the river. The first school was taught in the
woodshed of the Pierce house by a Miss Young. Paine Converse settled on
the East side of the river near the bridge. He later became the first
supervisor. |

Samuel Partridge, from Potsdam, built a
forge at the head of the falls on the East side of the river. Its
products were flat and square bar-iron made chiefly from magnetic ore. |

The Partridge forge was purchased by Hiram
Pierce, who kept it in operation until 1840. |
