1860-1868

 

1860 The Baptist Church was organized with 15 members in February. The building was built and dedicated the same year, at a cost of $2,500. Census figures place the population at 1,400.
1861 The Townships of Harewood and Sherwood were taken from Colton and annexed to Clifton.
1864 St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church was organized in October. The Society purchased the Universalist Church at a cost of $1,200.
1868 About this time a telegraph line was built from Canton to Colton. Hawley Hepburn was the first operator and was succeeded by Charles Olmstead. Dr. Moses Smith opened practice, with home and office in the Village of Colton.
