1870-1879

 

1870 Census figures place population at 1,719. 1,403 were natives, 316 foreigners and all were white.
1872 The Town contained 8 school districts, employing 10 teachers. The number of children of school age was 734.
1874 A Singing School was taught in South Colton by Clarence Brown of Pierrepont.
1876 In February the Townships of Jamestown and Oakham were annexed to Colton from Hopkinton, making Colton the largest Township in the county, embracing 155,520 acres.
1878 Nelson Tupper opened a Cheese Factory in South Colton. It was supplied by milk from 185 cows. This year 340 boxes of No.1 cheese were made.
1879 Mrs. Stella Ayers taught school in South Colton.
