1890-1899

 

1890 The first Post Office was established at Hollywood on May 28, with Jeremiah Reynolds as the first Postmaster.

George Swift came to South Colton to work on the iron bridge. He met Abbie Armstrong. Soon after they were married.
1891 Resolution made to repair Stark Falls Bridge.
1892 Petition by 25 people to build a new iron bridge in Colton.
1893 Cornelius Hayes sued Town for $500 after he fell into the river off the Colton Bridge. He was given $50.

The first pulp mill was built near the Village of Colton and operated by the Raquette River Pulp Company.
1894 1st Fire District formed.
1896 Dr. Will Schwartz began his 50 year practice of medicine and surgery. He served as Heath Officer and Town Supervisor. He is well remembered for his professional skill and his beautiful peonies and gladiolas.
1899 The first telephone line, a single wire, grounded type was strung (mostly on trees) from Colton to Tupper Lake Junction. It was an independent line, built and owned by William Robinson of Potsdam. At the time there were no telephones in private residences.

Early phones were at Nathan Jefferson's and John Dailey's stores.
