1901-1909

 

1901 Empire Exchange Hotel burned.
1904 The original phone line was taken over by the Adirondack Telephone Co., installing more phones. After that it was sold, or the name changed, to the Mountain Home Telephone Co., then to the Northern New York Telephone Co., and finally to the New York Telephone Co., as it is today.
1905 A municipal lighting plant was built on the east side of the Racquette River just below the falls at Colton village. Power was generated for street lights, later for home and business uses.
1906 A Rural Free Delivery Route #1, was established in June. It delivered mail to the rural population on the west side of Colton. This route was about 25 miles long and was first operated by Ernest Bancroft, with Archie Collins as substitute. 
1907 The first car was owned and operated by Ernest Bancroft. It was an Orient Buckboard which he used to carry the mail. The second car was a four cylinder Franklin, with an air cooled motor, owned and operated by Dr. Miller, South Colton.

The Sevey Post Office was discontinued on December 31.
1909 Richard Brown of Colton purchased one of the first Fords to be sold in this area.
