The first hard surfaced road, having a black
asphalt top, was built between Potsdam and Colton. |
| 1911 |
Rural Route #2 was established in October with
James Sullivan as operator. This route was about 20 miles long and served
the east side of the village. Jesse Crossman served as substitute. |
| 1912 |
Hepburn Library was given to the Town of
Colton by the Honorable A. Barton Hepburn.
Bertrand H. Snell arranged for the building of a dam at Higley Falls. |
| 1913 |
Hepburn Library was formally opened on June 14
in the presence of the largest audience ever assembled in the village of
Colton. Addresses were made by Hon. A. Barton Hepburn, President Almon
Gunnison of St. Lawrence University and Hon. E. A. Merritt of Potsdam.
In March, a power plant on the west bank of the river at the foot of
Higley Falls was completed and began the production of power. |
| 1918 |
One and one-half miles of wooden penstock and
one half mile of steel penstock, 12 feet in diameter, were constructed to
connect the falls in Colton with a power plant two miles North at Brown's
Bridge. |
