THE VIRGINIA C. SMITH OUTSTANDING CITIZEN AWARD
2025 Winner - Andrea Malik
Andrea Malik of Colton, NY has been awarded the Virginia C. Smith Citizen of the Year for the year 2025. The award is presented each year by the Colton Historical society.
Andrea, aka the “Black Fly Diva”, has worked for the town of Colton since 1985 as director of the BTI Black Fly and Mosquito Control Programs, and, more recently, Invasive Species Program.
Following her passion for nature, the outdoors, and everything wild, Andrea studied tracking, awareness, and survival with Tom Brown Jr.; and occasionally teaches tracking workshops.
Andrea has taught classes and workshops at St. Lawrence University, Clarkson University, and Canton College.
She is a graduate of SUNY Potsdam, with a Bachelor’s in Arts degree in Geology and Biology, and lives in the foothills of the Adirondacks on the Raquette River in Colton, NY. In addition, she is founder of the Forest Spirit Martial Arts, and is an expert in several, including QiGong.
Andrea enjoys playing Native American style flutes, canoeing, paddle boarding and camping.

The annual Citizen of the Year Award honors a Colton resident who is an active volunteer that exemplifies the adage ‘neighbors caring for neighbors.’ Each year the award is given by the Colton Historical Society to a resident who has provided outstanding service to the Town of Colton Community. Award recipients, listed below, are identified on a plaque in the Board Room of the Colton Town Hall.
